Diptyque’s most popular candles are “classic” size: 6.5 ounces. But it produces a small range of its candles in the very large format: These monsters are 51.6 oz, weigh over three pounds, burn for 120 hours, and cost a fortune ($430). They’re also “suitable for large rooms and outdoors” — think big events in need of a signature scent and late-night summer patios — and they come in jars so fancy they’re described as “vessels.” Finally: Each one has five wicks, if you’re counting them.
Here they are, ranked by fragrance and including this summer’s extra-large limited edition, in Citronnelle.
#1: Feu de Bois
In sum: Feu de Bois is Diptyque’s best scent: It’s autumn in candle form, like the best-ever version of a cozy wood fire. Here’s a full review.
Comes in: A light gray “terracotta vessel” that may channel its burning-log vibes a little literally, with darker gray at the edges. (The nicest Feu de Bois is actually the medium-size version, which comes in a dark-gray glass container.)
Very large Feu de Bois candle, $430
#2: Ambre
In sum: I’m new to Ambre, but this is now a top-five pick for me. Think romance, nostalgia, glam, and adventure. If Marion from Indiana Jones had a very sophisticated older sister, she’d live in a villa that smelled like this. Here’s a full review.
Comes in: An appropriately amber-colored (yellow-orange) ceramic jar.
Very large Ambre candle, $430
#3 Citronelle
In sum: This is only a limited-edition summer scent, but it is summer in a bottle: sweet (but not too much so), crisp, fresh. It’s the candle form of the Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend. (Also, officially: lemongrass.)
Comes in: An absolutely gorgeous ceramic jar with illustrations by Marie-Victoire de Bascher.
Very large Citronnelle candle, $430
#4: Roses
In sum: This isn’t Diptyque’s best rose-centric candle — that would be Fleur de Cerisier, ironically — but it is lovely, even if a little powdery.
Comes in: A quite cool pink ceramic vessel.
Very large Roses candle, $430
#5: Figuier
In sum: Another prototypical summer scent, though Citronnelle is better.
Comes in: The same ceramic vessel, now in a glossy green.
Very large Figuier candle, $430
#6: Tubéreuse
In sum: A strong, sort of all-purpose white floral. Not rose-y! I don’t love it, but I admire how strong it is.
Comes in: A glossy, scarlet, terracotta jar.
Very large Tubéreuse candle, $430
#7: 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain
In sum: Diptyque’s signature scent — it doesn’t do much for me. Officially Diptyque says it’s “elegant and uncategorizable,” which for me translates as “impossible to describe” in the worst sense, like it’s just so nebulous that it doesn’t add up to much.
Comes in: A giant white terracotta jar.
Very large 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain candle, $445
#8: Baies
In sum: I just can’t with Baies. If you love it, I get it, but this is a candle for a worst-ever corporate retreat if ever there was one.
Comes in: A dramatic, matte-black terracotta jar.
Very large Baies candle, $430
