The Best Magazine Store in Paris

best magazine store in paris - cahier central

If you’re looking for the best magazine store in Paris, you’ve come to the right post.

Paris has great magazine stores, though they often serve a very specific client: the client who’s not going to blink too hard at a Finnish design magazine that only comes out once every three years and costs €85. You’ll find ambitious European fashion magazines at shops like these below — especially at places like 0fr, Yvon Lambert and Bonjour Jacob. For the most part, you’ll want to skip independent booksellers, which often don’t stock magazines at all. On the other hand, if you’re just looking for the latest Bon Appétit or New Yorker, we have options like Smith & Son, with its huge and not-intimidating collection, and Relay, which is limited to rail and transport stations but within them is utterly ubiquitous.

If you love magazines, one of these seven options below has what you’re seeking. Good luck!

Smith & Son

The best selection of English-language magazines in town. Lots of the spots below carry fancy fashion and travel magazines — Smith & Son is the only one that also carries more run-of-the-mill stuff like Good Housekeeping and Martha Stewart Living, as well as a slew of foreign newspapers. Definitely go to the original location on the rue de Rivoli, as the smaller offshoot in the Marais has a much smaller selection. They say themselves that they carry the “largest choice of international magazines in Europe!” As long as “Europe” doesn’t include the U.K. and all the fantastic magazine shops in London, I’m sure that’s true. While the highly curated selections at places like Bonjour Jacob are magnificent, this would actually win my vote for the best magazine store in Paris — if you want it, they’ve (probably) got it.

0fr

Speaking of fancy magazine shops with all the fashion titles you’d like. As they put it: “magazines and books about fashion, graphic design, photo, interior design….” You’ll find all your €2o magazines here, like Holiday, SSAW, Luncheon, Purple, Self Service, Cabana, and a bunch no one’s even heard of yet.

Cahier Central

This is a really great, new-in-this-location shop offering a super-smart collection of magazines, used and new books, and zines. Best of all, it has a thoughtful online collection, so you can see before you leave that they have the new Dapper Dan (or Frieze, or Blau International) in stock, and prepare yourself for the sticker shock. Quite close to 0fr if you want to catch them both. Come here for fashion, design, politics, and the like.

bonjour jacob

Bonjour Jacob

Another great spot a few minutes’ walk from République, Brother Jacob is part-café, part magazine store — or as they have it, a concept store that claims as its concept “Coffee I Magazine I Vinyl.” Like Cahier Central, they do a good job ensuring that their titles are represented online — look for classics like Dinette, Monocle, Faire, The Gourmand, and more. I prefer the location in the 10th, but they have another in the 6th, at 30 rue Dauphine.

It would be gauche not to mention the cute Club Jacob, a subscription service supplying one or two  “titre diffèrent sélectionné par l’équipe bonjour jacob,” for €15 or €25, respectively.

yvon lambert

Yvon Lambert

Though it’s better known as an excellent art book store (with an impressive gallery), Yvon Lambert has a small but excellent collection of similarly minded international magazines, like Apartamento, Blumenhaus, Matto, and more.

Relay

Sometimes you’ll less in the mood for a €35 German magazine about flowers than you are for, like, the international edition of Time. For that — well, go to Smith & Son if you’re in the neighborhood. But if you’re in a train station, definitely make a beeline for the nearest Relay, which will be familiar in its vibe to any fans of Hudson News. No one’s going to consider Relay the best magazine store in Paris, and you probably won’t discover an unknown Croatian biannual about crocheting here — but you will find all the major French fashion, business, and lifestyle titles, along with a smattering of the biggest anglophone mags, plus candy and Pringles (win).

Relay, many locations, but a ubiquitous sight in all major railway stations

Kiosques

Don’t sleep on neighborhood kiosks, which often have a good selection of fancy magazines along with the full range of French and international newspapers. You can find one near you by googling “kiosque a journaux” in your neighborhood, but expect to see one at busy intersections throughout the city.
