What they say: “A multitasking moisturizer, with powerful pineapple enzymes and encapsulated sodium hyaluronate, that provides deep hydration and rexturizing results for a glowing, makeup-ready canvas.”

Our grade: C-

Most explicative Sephora comment headline: “I actually don’t love this product.”

The Marc Jacobs Youthquake Hydra-full Retexturizing Gel Crème Moisturizer review: This is a moisturizer that is bad at moisturizing but good at other things, which is frustrating. Maybe market it is as “a thing that smells nice, sort of like pineapples and coconuts.” Or “a beauty product that comes in absolutely gorgeous packaging.” And all of these qualities — how it smells, how it looks: A++. But as a moisturizer? Or a retexturizer? No.

I’m down with the idea of a lightweight gel moisturizer, especially for summer. But this was so non-moisturizing that I actually had to go back and look at the product description to make sure this actually was a moisturizer, and not, like, a semi-solid serum. It did not make my skin feel smoother, or brighter, or indeed more moisturized. In the middle of writing that sentence, I went to the bathroom mirror to see if anything had happened — but no. You’d think that those pineapple enzymes would do a better job brightening things up. Instead, there’s a barely-there sheen, and my skin’s slightly sticky. In all the ways that really count, this is a fail.

Even if it smells nice.

Buy it again? No. And returned what I had left.
