Sossusvlei Desert Lodge Terrible interiors (maybe updated since I was there)—but otherwise the most magical, otherworldly place I’ve ever been • The Park Hyatt, Tokyo That’s the Lost in Translation hotel, y’all • Lion Sands Ivory Lodge Spent one night on the floor throwing up from food poisoning (er, not from something I ate here) but otherwise perfect • Shangri-La Pudong, Shanghai Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Bund—amazing • Riad No. 9 Not least because the owners let me literally sleep on their sofa when my reservation was over, they were fully booked up, and I was too sick to move • Otozure, Nagato, Japan A ryokan in a rural part of Japan with an amazing onsen overlooking a river teeming with carp, overlooked by butterflies, and occasionally visited by heron
