French lavender fields are justly famous and visiting one can be a highlight of a trip to Provence. That’s where you find them at their most photogenic — and ideally in July, as the lovely purple bloom usually begins in mid-June and ends in mid-August, subject to weather and geography.
Experiences will vary, between stays on a lavender farm, guided tours of the fields from Valensole to Drôme, or just taking your chances on scenic drives throughout the region. (You can raise those chances inestimably by following the tourism board-endorsed Route de la Lavande.) Alternatively, you can just show up at the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, an active religious site, shown above, that offers tours, very crowded conditions for most of the summer, and lavender-centric gifts in the shop, as well as honeys, jams, cookies, olive oils, soaps and perfumes.
